How to Withdraw Funds from a Frozen Crypto Wallet
You open your app and see Funds on hold. Balance visible, withdrawals blocked. The first instinct is to write to support. Without preparation, that can make things worse. Here is the step-by-step guide for each freeze type.
Why Is Your Wallet Frozen: Three Distinct Scenarios
A crypto wallet or exchange account can be frozen for three reasons: an exchange AML/KYC compliance block (roughly 90% of all cases), a court-ordered judicial seizure, or a technical failure at the protocol or smart contract level. Each type has different symptoms, requires different documents, and follows a different resolution path.
How to identify your type
Exchange AML/KYC block. The exchange sends a notification requesting documents, a message about account restrictions, or shows a status of "Account under review." Your balance is visible but withdrawals are disabled. This is an internal compliance procedure triggered automatically when an AML flag fires or when KYC data is inconsistent.
Court-ordered seizure. The exchange notifies you of a court order, or you learn about the seizure from an investigator or notary. Since 3 March 2026 in Russia, law No. 38-FZ has classified cryptocurrency as property under criminal procedure law. Exchanges are now legally required to comply with court freeze orders.
Technical failure. A transaction is stuck, a protocol is unavailable, or a DeFi smart contract is malfunctioning. No messages from the exchange: the operation simply cannot be completed.
Exchange AML Block: The Step-by-Step Process
This is the most common scenario. The exchange has not confiscated your funds: it has placed them on hold pending review. The goal is to provide the right explanation in the right format at the right time.
Five steps to unfreeze your account
Step 1. Read the request carefully. Identify whether compliance is asking a KYC question (identity, proof of address) or an AML question (source of funds). These are different procedures requiring different documents. Responding to an AML request with KYC documents signals to compliance that you do not understand what they are asking.
Step 2. Run an AML check on your address. Use an independent service: AMLBot, Crystal, or Elliptic. You will receive a risk score — a percentage indicating how suspicious your funds appear. Your entire strategy depends on this number.
Step 3. Assess your risk score and choose a strategy.
- 0–35%: Low risk. Attach the AML report and prepare a basic document package. According to amlcrypto.io, most cases in this range are resolved within 24–72 hours.
- 35–50%: Medium risk. Additional evidence is needed: chat history with counterparties, P2P trade receipts, contracts.
- 50%+: High risk. Resolving this independently is very difficult. See our detailed guide on exchange account unfreeze for the professional approach.
Step 4. Prepare one consistent response. Write it once, sequentially, with supporting documents. Do not send multiple tickets with conflicting versions of events.
Step 5. Submit through the official ticket system. Only through the exchange's official support channel, not via email found in a search engine, and not through any "support" account found on Telegram.
According to Coin Bureau, a standard KYC review takes 3 to 10 business days. Complex AML investigations can last up to 90 days.
What Is Source of Funds and What Does It Include?
Source of Funds is the document package that proves the legitimate origin of your cryptocurrency. The exchange is not checking your identity: it is checking where the money came from. The package includes transaction history, bank statements, contracts, tax records, or other supporting evidence — depending on how you acquired the funds.
The exact contents depend on the source of your crypto:
- Purchased on another exchange: trade history export (PDF or CSV) with dates, amounts, and statuses. If purchased with fiat: a bank statement confirming the debit.
- P2P trading income: screenshots and exports of each trade, chat history with counterparties, payment confirmations.
- Salary or freelance income: employment contract, payslips, or tax declaration for the relevant period.
- Sale of property or assets: sale agreement and bank transfer confirmation.
According to sejournal.io, in 2026 exchanges only accept documents in English or with a notarised translation. Documents in other languages without translation are rejected automatically.
Building the on-chain portion of the package requires a professional blockchain transaction analysis: it maps where funds travelled and confirms their legitimate origin. For a detailed walkthrough of what this looks like in practice, read our guide on unfreezing a blocked crypto wallet.
Court-Ordered Crypto Seizure: What Changed in 2026
Since 3 March 2026, cryptocurrency in Russia is officially recognised as property under criminal procedure law. Under law No. 38-FZ, exchanges are required to comply with court seizure orders. Lifting a court-ordered seizure requires going through the courts: appealing the order, filing an objection, or having the criminal case closed. Transferring funds to another address will not work.
An important distinction. According to fcbg.ru, bailiffs technically cannot freeze a self-custody wallet (MetaMask, Ledger): there is no technical mechanism for this. A centralised exchange is a different matter. If funds are held on Binance, Bybit, or OKX, an investigator can obtain a court order compelling the exchange to freeze the account.
What to do when facing a court seizure:
- Identify the legal basis: investigator's order, court ruling, or international cooperation request.
- Engage a lawyer with experience in crypto criminal cases.
- If the seizure was applied in error: file a complaint with the prosecutor or court.
If you are in this situation, start with a professional assessment. Our exchange account restrictions page explains which options are realistic for different scenarios.
Technical Failure and DeFi Freezes: A Different Problem
This is not a compliance block and not a seizure. The cause is technical: a smart contract bug, protocol outage, or a built-in stablecoin freeze function.
Stuck transaction. The transaction was sent but has not been confirmed by the network due to a low gas fee or network congestion. Fix: replace the transaction using RBF (Replace-by-Fee) in Bitcoin, or send a new one with a higher gas price in Ethereum.
Smart contract error. In March 2026, an oracle failure in the Aave protocol caused incorrect liquidations totalling $26 million. Funds were frozen until the technical incident was resolved. In such cases, the only path forward is an official request to the protocol team and waiting for their fix.
Stablecoin freeze function. According to kyc-chain.com, Tether (USDT) has a built-in address blacklisting function. If your address is added to the OFAC sanctions list, Tether can freeze funds at the smart contract level. These cannot be unfrozen independently.
For situations involving partial restrictions or withdrawal limits rather than a full freeze, see our guide on lifting exchange account restrictions.
Mistakes That Turn Weeks into Months
Most cases drag on not because the situation is complicated, but because of actions taken by the account holder in the first few days.
- Ignoring the request for more than 48 hours. The case automatically escalates to the next review level. Rule: send a preliminary response within 24 hours, even if your documents are not yet ready.
- Contradictory explanations. Every response to the exchange is logged. Any inconsistency between tickets increases the compliance team's suspicion.
- Attempting to withdraw in small increments. Splitting a large sum into smaller transactions is a classic "structuring" pattern — one of the most recognised AML red flags. Once detected, the account is typically blocked permanently.
- Logging in via VPN during the review. Changing your IP address or device creates additional signals of suspicious activity and significantly complicates the case.
- Opening a new account on the same exchange. Exchanges link accounts through KYC data. When a duplicate is detected, both accounts are usually blocked permanently.
